What's New in the Library

Some of the greatest minds in the history of the world have been dismissed because they were covered with curls and bows… ostensibly one-half the human race is doing everything significant and the other half doesn’t exist.
~ Historian Gerda Lerner, founder of the field of women's history

Everyone’s contributions deserve to be celebrated. In honor of Women's History Month, we are highlighting books written in the last year about remarkable, determined, trailblazing women! These books feature a broad range of women in many different fields, from science to the arts to politics and activism. These books remind us to tell women's stories all year long!

The DH

Alex Myers's football and basketball seasons were mired in controversy, and his dad has been MIA since his parents split up. All Alex wants this spring is to work on his fastball and hang out with his maybe-girlfriend, Christine. But he runs into unexpected competition. Matt Gordon was suspended from sports, but the athletic board has decided to give him another chance. So he's on the team and he's got something to prove. He's also got his eye on Christine. Is all fair in love and baseball? Or are some things truly unforgivable?

Parties and Potions

Perfect hair, cute clothes, healthy tans--life's a breeze when you're a witch! Even special witchcraft classes Rachel agrees to attend with Miri turn out to be fun. The sisters meet other teen witches just like them--who knew? Everyone's preparing for a magical party called a Samsorta--a debutante ball for witches. And it wouldn't be a ball without warlocks. Cute ones. Like Adam, who wants to slow dance with Rachel, and ski with her in the Rockies--on a school night! Of course, Rachel is madly in love with her boyfriend, Raf. So why can't she bring herself to tell Adam--funny, charming Adam--that Raf exists?

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Vol. 1

Once, wizards tried to conquer the Sacred Realm of Hyrule, but the Spirits of Light sealed the wizards' power within the Shadow Crystal and banished them to the Twilight Realm. Now, an evil menace is trying to find fragments of the Shadow Crystal to gain power and rule the land. But danger and adventure always find heroes to set things right. Link, once trained in swordsmanship, hoping to protect the world of Hyrule, has settled in a small village to seek peace and anonymity. When the dark minions of the King of Shadows threaten his new home, Link answers the call!

Russian Roulette

Teen secret agent Alex Rider's story began prior to his first case for MI6, known by the code name Stormbreaker. By the time Stormbreaker forever changed Alex's life, his uncle had been murdered by the assassin Yassen Gregorovich, leaving Alex orphaned and craving revenge. Yet when Yassen had a clear shot to take out Alex, he let Alex live. Why? This is Yassen's story. A journey down the darker path of espionage.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Vol. 2

In this second Zelda book, Link awakens in the Twilight Realm, in the form of a wolf! Here he meets Midna, and she escorts Link to Hyrule Castle where none other than Princess Zelda bestows a question upon him--if the world is to be saved from the encroaching darkness, Link must recover the shards of the Shadow Crystal. The task will be long and difficult, and Link will need to use new powers he doesn't know he has!

Spinning

This powerful graphic memoir captures what it's like to come of age, come out, and come to terms with leaving behind everything you used to know. For ten years, figure skating was Tillie Walden's life. She woke before dawn for morning lessons, went straight to group practice after school, and spent weekends competing at ice rinks across the state. Skating was a central piece of her identity, her safe haven from the stress of school, bullies, and family. But as she switched schools, got into art, and fell in love with her first girlfriend, she began to question how the close-minded world of figure skating fit in with the rest of her life, and whether all the work was worth it. The more Tillie thought about it, the more she realized she'd outgrown her passion--and she finally needed to find her own voice.

Artemis

The bestselling author of The Martian returns with an irresistible new near-future thriller--a heist story set on the moon. Jasmine Bashara never signed up to be a hero. She just wanted to get rich. Her hometown is Artemis, humanity's first and only lunar colony. When a chance at a huge score finally comes her way, Jazz can't say no. It requires her to graduate from small-time smuggler to full-on criminal mastermind. And it calls for a particular combination of cunning, technical skills, and large explosions--not to mention sheer brazen swagger. The trouble is, engineering the perfect crime is just the start of Jazz's problems. Because her little heist is about to land her in the middle of a conspiracy for control of Artemis itself.

The Spectacular Sisterhood of Superwomen

A woman's place is saving the universe.   Think comic books can't feature strong female protagonists? Think again! In The Spectacular Sisterhood of Superwomen you'll meet the most fascinating exemplars of the powerful, compelling, entertaining, and heroic female characters who've populated comic books from the very beginning. This spectacular sisterhood includes costumed crimebusters like Miss Fury, super-spies like Tiffany Sinn, sci-fi pioneers like Gale Allen, and even kid troublemakers like Little Lulu. With vintage art, publication details, a decade-by-decade survey of industry trends and women's roles in comics, and spotlights on iconic favorites like Wonder Woman and Ms. Marvel, The Spectacular Sisterhood of Superwomen proves that not only do strong female protagonists belong in comics, they've always been there.
