ENG. 10: Frankenstein Research Slide Assignment

Frankenstein Research Slide Assignment

CLASS GOALS

  • Build your search skills to help you be an effective researcher
  • brainstorm some useful keywords and phrases as ingredients in your search
  • learn to efficiently locate print and database/newspaper sources for your assignment
  • use books on reserve, Gale: Opposing Viewpoints and The New York Times to find good results

Useful strategies for searching within Gale Opposing Viewpoints:

Start with a question or a topic.

Ex: Who should decide whether we should eat genetically modified foods?
Ex: If meats can be grown in laboratories, how do we determine whether this is an ethical and positive development?

Brainstorm a list of keywords and phrases relevant to your topic. Be sure to think up some synonyms!

Use quotation marks for exact phrases. Here are some examples:

  • "genetically modified food"
  • "food production"
  • "food safety"

Use truncation by adding an asterisk (*) to catch all endings of a word:

  • ethic* finds ethic, ethics, ethical, etc.
  • surg* finds surgery, surgeries, surgical, surgically, etc.

Now think of additional keywords or synonyms to stack that could be useful:
Good searches take skill and practice. You'll use these skills all the time in the Upper School and far beyond.
